A pounding headache dragged Kisk from his straw pallet to the bucket of water that sat next to his sleeping corner. He practically drowned himself sticking his entire head in the bucket to lap up as much water as he could to ease the parched feeling of his throat and try to wash away the sickening taste on his tongue.

As soon as the water hit his stomach, it heaved with rejection, and he had to crawl to the other side of his room on hands and knees to the waste bucket, barely making it before the meager contents of his stomach were forced up into his throat and then into the bucket, which was thankfully empty at the moment.

He alternated drinking water with heaving it up several more times before he was able to keep it down, though none of that helped his aching head. When he was able to think straight, he considered the fact that he’d somehow made it back to his apartment and barred the door from any intrepid males who were stupid enough to break one of New Omni’s laws for Kisk’s meager possessions.

On the one shelf where he stored what little food he kept in the apartment sat a couple of odd, hard, bread-like squares wrapped in a noisy, crinkly material some males called “plastic” that he’d bought from a food stall on a whim.

They tasted sweet, if a bit stale, and he liked the crunch of them, but at the moment he was more concerned with the fact that out of the sparse collection of stored foodstuffs, they seemed the least likely to end up making him even sicker.

He selected two of the five he had remaining, knowing it wasn’t likely there would be a new supply of them, though there were males in the settlement attempting to recreate many of the foods that were found by scavenging patrols. It was a pity he’d have to waste the sweet, hard-bread on a sour stomach like his, but stumbled back to his mat and sat down slowly, hoping to avoid any more insult to his aching stomach or head.

He pondered the Veraza’s words as he chewed the food, washing down each dry bite with lapped-up water from the ladle he lifted out of his water bucket.

The Veraza somehow knew about Alice, but he was still ignorant about Kisk. He thought Kisk wanted Alice as a mate, but Kisk had no such inclinations.

What good would she do for him? Even if it made him happy to hear her voice and see her face, regardless of whether it wore a bright smile or an annoyed scowl, he had no use for a female like Alice.

He had no need of a mate at all, and besides, he couldn’t give Alice what she wanted most. Not without the help of other males. He could never be the father she wanted for her children, nor the family she seemed to crave. He had no experience with such things. All he knew how to do was test people by fighting them.
